The Schaubühne presents the world debut of Romeo Castellucci's direction of Sophokles' Oedipus the Tyrant in Berlin this month.

Romeo Castellucci takes the poetic translation by Hölderlin as the basis of his latest theatre production. Again, Castellucci has women interpret the text by Hölderlin, whom he regards as a "quintessentially female poet". He approaches the Oedipus material from the greatest possible distance, helped in no small way by the strangeness of Hölderlin's frequently drama-disabling language, in order to cast a new light on this "prototype of tragedy" and to lay bare the archetype of familial and sexual trauma and taboo.

10 September 2014: Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio presents the world debut of Romeo Castellucci's Go Down, Moses in Lausanne this weekend, Paris next month, and then across the globe.

Following the steps of Moses, this “powerful and solitary man”, Romeo Castellucci takes us into a world that escapes words. Of course it is not a chronological story of the prophet’s life, but a fleeting touch on its mystery, through a succession of paintings whose beauty and peculiarity open onto a world that escapes words.

12 August 2014: RUHRtriennale presents the world debut of Italian director Romeo Castellucci's concept for Le Sacre du Printemps. Castellucci breaks with 100 years of performance history and returns Sacre to its material origins. In so doing, Stravinsky's machine of sound forms a central point of departure: sudden sounds, driving, overlapping rhythmic patterns, extensive repetitions. Castellucci translates all this into a choreography of bone dust. With this industrially treated animal material, which is used in agriculture as fertilizer, Castellucci refers to the motifs of sacrifice and fertility. He transforms the dust into a kind of molecular dance: "as if the dancers in the space were atomized and became a cloud of dust . . . dancing dust particles, the perpetual dance of the universe." He thus places the work at a critical distance, returning to le Sacre some of the alterity that the piece has lost on its way to becoming a classic. With his radical reinterpretation, Castellucci poses the question of whether this musical-choreographic work can still be danced today, or whether other means are necessary to experience the collision of beauty with the brutality of the sacrifice.

Using audio taken from microbiological research, Scott Gibbons' prologue underscores Stravinsky's intension that le Sacre be a "biological" ballet.

28 February, 2014: Dialogo degli schiavi is a new production by Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio under the direction of Claudia Castellucci with new original music and arrangements by Claudia Castellucci and Scott Gibbons with Stefano Bartolini. The debut is 2 March, at Teatro A. Masini in Faenza, Italy. Dialogo degli schiavi ("The Dialogue of the slaves") is a ballad written and played in the first person by Claudia Castellucci, confirming the characteristics of the genre. The text promises to regress into a state of primitive perception of things, where the habits appear to emerge as foreign, after a long sleep. It makes room for a suspension of judgment that stands the well-founded concreteness of things, as objects of an objective view.

23 June, 2013: Groupe F bring La Saga des Photons to Leffrinckoucke on Friday, 26 July. After illuminating the Fête d’'Ouverture de Dunkerque 2013, and enchanting the Parc du Fort-Louis of Coudekerque-Branche for two magical evenings, the tribe of Photons continues their exploration of the Dunkirk region. Appearing and disappearing at will, defying the laws of gravity, walking on water and sometimes setting themselves alight, the Photons - a small population of bright explorers - will build this time in the majestic scenery of the beach and Batterie Dewulf de Leffrinckoucke. Eruptive vessels, waves of stars and fire breaking on the piers, creature flame gliding on the water, chorus of music and light signals, raise the industrial sun and pyrotechnic storm, this monumental symphony of signals of pleasure commands a great tidal wave of lights, energy and shared emotions.

Scott Gibbons has been working with Christophe Berthonneau to create a new instrument of blown tubes for the show. New arrangements and original music are being created especially for the occasion.

22 June, 2013: There are several activities for the coming weeks!

Prelude to an Event debuts 27 June at Plac Wolności in Poznań, Poland. Embark on a pioneering sonic exploration through a newly penetrated world in which it is possible to hear the restless jostling of atoms and molecules. Scott Gibbons' haunting music is comprised entirely and exclusively from an entirely new type of microphone that allows scientists to listen to sounds at the molecular scale. This "micro-ear" is being developed at the University of Glasgow by scientists Prof Miles Padgett in the School of Physics & Astronomy and Prof Jon Cooper in the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. The very first sounds being revealed from this microphone are sampled, filtered, overlaid and processed in a quest to recognize and suggest patterns and stories from a place far beyond our species' natural powers of perception. Romeo Castellucci creates original visual effects for the concert event.

Prelude to an Event enjoys it's world premiere at the Malta Festival - Poland's leading performing arts festival - whose musical program also includes Kraftwerk, Atoms for Peace, Cat Power, Diamond Version; and who will also be staging Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio's The Four Seasons Restaurant by Romeo Castellucci with original music by Scott Gibbons from 24 - 26 June at Centrum Kultury ZAMEK, Poznań [Poland].

Groupe F emerge from their residence at the new FabrikA facility of the Avignon Festival with Ouvert!, which will take place 5 July. "Open!", like FabricA, the new rehearsal and residence venue of the Festival d'Avignon that Groupe F is inaugurating at the junction of the Monclar and Champfleury districts. "Open!" like the spirit of this creation that will be given outdoors, designed in liaison and dialogue with a territory in which the company spent several months in residence. A residence during which it notably moderated, each month, with the Festival, workshops in the neighbourhood's elementary schools. Its members harvested sensations and images from them, absorbed this venue's past and present to create, based on the notion of precariousness, a poem enlivened by all the lights that makes unexpected imaginary dimensions spring from the ordinary. In a landscape recomposed by fire, flames and images, men as fireflies travel, soar and make our reading of the environment vacillate. In the fireworks ballets of Groupe F, there is the disturbing power of the volcanic eruption and the attentive gentleness of the story whispered to children. “A big bang that took place in an instant”, sums up the director Christophe Berthonneau, who is orchestrating the encounter of several dozen fireworks technicians, acrobats and actors on the original music of the composer Scott Gibbons, well-known by the Festival d'Avignon's spectators for his work with Romeo Castellucci. Moved by the encounters they had in the FabricA district, the artists of Groupe F present a gift to its neighbours and festival-goers. A spectacular, poetic explosive charge to open a utopia factory dedicated to inventing new possibilities.

12 June, 2013: The Rite of Spring, which would have debuted at the Manchester International Festival this summer, has been canceled. This staging of the Rite - directed by Romeo Castellucci, conducted by Teodor Currentzis, and with an original sound score composed by Scott Gibbons - is not yet possible in the format that the artist has envisioned. The six MIF shows were due to take place in a former railway depot in the city centre which, unfortunately, was only recently determined to be incapable of housing the equipment necessary to deliver the technical requirements of the show. We will continue to realize the production with Ruhrtriennale in Germany and Perm State Opera and Ballet Theatre in Russia, and plan ultimately to return to Manchester as soon as feasible. More details will be available in due course.

16 March, 2013: Hyperion. Letters of a Terrorist will be performed in March and April at the Schaubühne in Berlin as part of the 2013 Festival of International New Drama. Hyperion is directed by Romeo Castellucci and features an original score by Scott Gibbons.

Having grown up in harmony with nature and the ancient world of the gods, the Greek, Hyperion, has joined the armed struggle against occupation. Confronted by the true brutality of war he loses his illusions, his friends and witnesses the death of his beloved, god-like Diotima. Alienated from the modern world, he becomes a hermit and seeks healing in the solitude of nature and in the contemplation of its beauty, only to find that beauty does not come without risk.

In 1797 Hölderlin wrote his epistolary novel »Hyperion«, a radical poetic manifesto and yet, at the same time also a confession of political failure, which reflected the collapse of his own revolutionary ideals.Romeo Castellucci, founder of the legendary Italian theatre collective Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio, transforms Hölderlin's lyrical prose into a radical and visually stunning performance piece, a political and poetic reflection on contemporary art, religion and rebellion, on literature as a drug and in the terrorism of beauty.

1 Jan, 2013: The Groupe F show Revelations will be displayed in Arles on 13 January from 6:30pm, from the banks of the Rhône, the city center and next to the bridge.

At nightfall, the Révélateurs, people made up of light, will travel to Arles to set alight the Rhône river and take over its banks. As symbolic representations of a dreamlike people, the Révélateurs appear and disappear at will, defying the laws of gravity. While floating in space, walking on water, stepping off cliffs and bursting into flames, they joyfully light up the places they explore. They form a tribe of strangers, a touching group of travelers.

Featuring new music by Scott Gibbons, the spectacle is one of several planned throughout 2013 to celebrate Marseille-Provence as the European Capital of Culture.

11 June, 2011: Persona is a new installation by Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio, created by Romeo Castellucci with sound by Scott Gibbons. It will be in the Piazetta of the National Theatre (Ostrovni 1) in Prague [CZ] as part of the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space. "I thought about installing a mask from Ancient Greek comedy for the Prague Quadrennial. It would be a faithful copy in bronze of a Silenus of the Hellenistic period (mid-first century BC). According to mythology, this character is the 'old' satyr who detested civilized society. Silenus was one of the fundamental characters in Ancient Greek comedy, represented by a bald mask with a Satanic expression and a mocking, sneering grin."

"To be brutally frank, the aim of this installation is to induce fear, not of the mask itself, but of the object it is contemplating: we, the audience, the catalogue of the species, both audience and show. The mask is all-seeing. The mask speaks of everything in a summation of all human languages. The human comedy is related with a comic tongue and the human being is looked upon with an inhuman gaze."
